Smart cars this year. The long-term plan is to increase electric vehicle production while adding other fuel cell and battery vehicles to the line. Company officials explain that service personnel at the dealerships must be specially trained in handling the high-voltage power systems in these types of vehicles. Daimler boasts that besides the drive systems their electric vehicles will showcase several new systems such as electric climate control and charging. This will require service department to be updated and the personnel to receive further training. Chicago certified Mercedes customers can be assured that their dealership will be ready to service any model they sell.
Mercedes and Smart dealers will help lead the way in the fuel cell movement and with the price of oil bound to increase again and again, more car manufacturers are responding with alternative-fuel vehicles. This competition among the producers will only benefit customers, as prices come down due to mass availability and the mileage range for battery operation is increased to meet demand. This type of movement would go a long way to reassure customers that they can get their car back home without having to search high and low for a power hook-up. The technology hasn't quite reached this level yet, but once vehicles are able to travel long-distance on a battery charge, this will be not only necessary for customers, but expected by them. The manufacturers need to be addressing the issue now.
Or maybe not. Perhaps some of us could, in the American entrepreneurial spirit, start our own chain of charging stations. We could franchise independent spots complete with spas and coffee/juice bars (something for everyone), or we could just be an add-on at every McDonald's and Macy's. I'm sure the government will have some grand plan to jump-start the economy by building charging stations. Maybe they'll give me a few million to start my chain.
